Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!

This past weekend, I had a conversation with the grandson of one of my parishioners about the Holy Scriptures. He reminded me of a conversation we had a few months back, and he reiterated what he had said the last time we spoke, saying: “Read the whole Bible. And if you’ve read it one, read it again. Just keep reading it.”

While all of us should heed his advice, it needs to be said that reading the Holy Scriptures is not enough. Rather, we need to read the Holy Scriptures prayerfully and attentively. What benefit is there to reading the Holy Scriptures if we come away from our reading having understood nothing of what we read? Our prayerful reading of the Holy Scriptures should open a deeper meaning to us, making our hearts burn like they did for the disciples on the Road to Emmaus in today’s Gospel.

Every Sunday, before the Holy Gospel, the priest prays “…Open the eyes of our minds that we may understand the message of Your Holy Gospel.” May this be our prayer every time we hear or read the Holy Scriptures.
