Mid-Pentecost; Our Venerable Father Pachomius the Great (346)

Read
Acts 14:6-18; John 7:14-30

Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!

In today’s Gospel lesson the authorities argue with and accuse Jesus, the author of life and source of goodness, of falsehood and being under the influence of darkness. Calling evil that which is good. Why are they so blind and unable to see the presence of God and His powerful works in their midst? It is very possible, that they had no desire to come to know the one true God. To genuinely come to know the one true God means that I will have to humble myself and make myself vulnerable to the truth. Accepting the truth means that I have to align my life with it. This means I will have to change not only my inner disposition but also my behaviour. The power, prestige, and authority I enjoy will have to undergo transformations and may have to be given up. This can be frightening. It is much easier to put up walls and defend at all costs the status quo. Walls not only keep people out, but they keep the love of God out of our life. God loves us no matter what we do, but unless we humbly open ourselves to receive His love we will never know the joy and fulfilment of being loved by Jesus Christ.
