Christ is born! Glorify Him!
We can only know the taste of divine nature through our participation in the Lord’s passion. This begins in Baptism, is renewed in every Eucharist, and is filled out in our daily crosses we take up: our daily dying. This phrase becomes the foundational phrase for the eastern Christian theme of “theosis,” the idea that through participation in the divine life, we become by grace what God is by nature. This entails a total interpenetration with God. The classic image is an iron rod placed in the fire. The iron doesn’t disappear but is only known by the properties of the fire.
