The Nine Holy Martyrs of Cyzicus (313-24); the Venerable Memnon the Wonderworker

Acts 8:18-25; John 6:35-39
Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
The Samaritans, who had received baptism by the hands of the deacon Philip, received the completion of the sacramental grace by the Apostles Peter and John. Notice that it is only the apostles, and those who are their successors—the bishops—who have the ability to confer the Holy Spirit. The Apostles were called to complete and seal the baptismal grace which the Samaritans received through deacon Philip. This Scripture teaches us that the Holy Spirit is essential for our Christian life, so much so that without the Grace of the Spirit we are incomplete. Without the Holy Spirit, we are unable to the live the way Christ desires that we live.
St. Peter the leader of the Apostles, who confers the Holy Spirit upon the Samaritans, teaches that in order for the Holy Spirit to dwell within us our hearts must be right before God. This means that Christians must always strive to protect their hearts from defilement. St. John Chrysostom adds that “Simon does everything out of malice…” and he lacked simplicity. He continues, “for if it had been done with simplicity, they would have even accepted his eagerness.” (Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles 18). Let us examine our hearts, even our motivations, and strive for greater simplicity that the Holy Spirit may strengthen, direct and sanctify us.
