The Holy Unmercenaries and Wonderworkers Cosmas and Damian
Romans 15:7-16; Matthew 12:38-45

Read Romans 15:7-16

Today, St. Paul reminds us of the general disposition of hospitality that Christians are to express at all times. A beautiful scriptural example of the blessings which flow from hospitality is found in the life of Abraham in Genesis 18. Here Abraham is presented as ready and waiting to show hospitality to passing tired travellers in need of rest and refreshment. As a result, the Lord appeared to Him in the form of three Angels and the moment of hospitality turned into a grace-filled encounter with God. Abraham’s example should inspire us always to be ready, and even to seek out, to offer hospitality in whatever way we can. This Canada Day, as we give thanks to God for this country, and the overabundance of material blessings we have at our disposal, we should remember that the blessings we receive are given to us so we can practice charity and hospitality. Let us be ready to welcome others as God has welcomed us.
