Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross, Tone 8
Holy Martyrs Trophimus, Sabbatius and Dorymedontus (276-82)
Galatians 2:16-20; Mark 8:34-9:1
Read Mark 8:34-9:1
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? (Mk 8:36-37 RSV CE)
For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Mk. 8:36-37 DRV)
Please notice the difference in the translations. One says “life” and the other one says “soul”. Both are correct translations of the Greek word “psyche”. And yet how different those two translations sound. I’m a big fan of the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition because of its accurate translations and more up to date English language. In my Bible studies I actually use the RSV CE. And yet here is an example of the superiority of the Douay Rheims Version that captures the classical understanding of this passage that a soul has infinite value.
