Second Sunday after Pascha. Thomas Sunday. The Holy Martyr Sabbas Stratelates (the General) (364-78)
Acts 5:12-20; John 20:19-31
Read Acts 5:12-20
Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
Eventually, any activity or relationship we are involved with that advances the healing and lifesaving work of Christ in the lives of others will be opposed. Sometimes that opposition will rear its ugly head from within the very persons we are reaching out to. Afterwards, playing it safe can become an attractive option. Why try to lovingly help others if something hurtful is going to happen to you again?
The apostles were at the very centre of what Christ was continuing to do and teach by the Holy Spirit after His ascension. But some within the community they were reaching out to had their own agenda for those who were finding life in Christ. When the apostles were opposed, the Lord delivered them…and sent them right back to the very same people to continue what they had been called to do. The salient question for us becomes, what are we delivered for?
When God has called you to go on a dangerous journey, it is no longer safe to stay where you are. Security with God is found within His calling, not in avoidance of it. Yes, do come aside with Him for times of healing and reflection, but return anew with direction and purpose from Him.
