Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!

Have you ever wondered why Eastern Catholics, Roman Catholics, and Orthodox celebrate the Divine Liturgy or Mass frequently? After all, not all Christians do this. Some Protestants celebrate the Eucharist once a month, once every three months, or even only once a year. So, why do we celebrate it every Sunday?

Today’s gospel gives us the beginning of an answer to this question. The disciples who returned to Jerusalem after meeting Jesus in Emmaus say to their fellow Christians that they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. This is the reason why we celebrate the Eucharist so often. We also want to recognize Jesus in the bread, we wanted to know Him and to understand who He is, and what He has done for us.

Often it seems like God is distant, like He is far away. It seems like we’re maintaining our faith without much help from above. Yet in the Eucharist, Jesus is always with us. He is feeding us with His own Body and Blood. The apostles also experienced a sense of Christ’s absence. They also knew what it was like to be spiritually lonely, but Jesus gave them the Bread of heaven, which reveals Himself to them, and to us. When you are wondering where God is, look for Him in the holy Eucharist. He is waiting for you there.
