Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
Have you ever considered the importance of a name? Our name connects us to those who have gone before us. It speaks to others about where we have come from and where we are going. It says something to us about our character and culture. For this reason when there is a change in name in the Scripture it’s an important event. That person has a change of direction and identity: “Abram” was changed to “Abraham”—exalted father to the father of many nations. Saul was changed to Saul after he stopped persecuting Christians. Simon was changed to Peter—the rock—when he was given the leadership role among the Apostles.
Notice that in all instances names are given and not taken. We are entrusted with a name and it is ultimately given or inspired by God Himself. For this reason we aught to take a moment to reflect on our name—birth and baptismal name if it’s different. What does it say about me and where I have come from? Where I am going and what I am called to?
