Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

Today we are given to contemplate the parable of the talents. At first glance this parable seems to speak to us about a the general population of humanity and our relationship with God, but when we look a little closer we will notice that it is directly speaking to us about Christ and his followers. Jesus is that nobleman who is the Word of God, fully divine, yet in his incarnation has become fully human except for sin. Through his death, resurrection, his ascension—enthronement over all things at the right hand of the Father—he receives kingly power over all creation. Those who are his servants are those who have been initiated through baptism unto union with him. You are “…not your own; you were bought with a price…” (1 Corinthians 6:20). We have been redeemed and bought by the blood of Christ. Our life belongs to the Lord. Not only has the Lord redeemed us, but he also calls us to participate in the expansion of the Kingdom with him. In fact, he invests his talents into each of us.

St. Cyril of Alexandria says, “To those who believe in him, the Saviour distributes a variety of divine gifts. We affirm that this is the meaning of the talent. Truly great is the difference between those who receive the talents and those who have even completely denied his kingdom. They are rebels that throw off the yoke of his sceptre, while the others are endowed with the glory of serving him. As faithful servants, therefore, they are entrusted with their Lord’s wealth. They gain something by doing business. They earn the praises due to faithful service, and they are considered worthy of eternal honours.” (Commentary on Luke, Homily 129).

Take a moment today to think about how I can better serve the Lord and further his Kingdom in my heart and in the world. Giving glory to God, wisely using and expanding the investment of grace that He has so generously bestowed upon me.
