St. Paul uses the word “wisdom” many times in our reading today. This word is often thrown around in our modern world. Maybe we’ve been accused of “being a wise guy” or making an unwise decision etc. But what is wisdom from a Christian point of view? Wisdom was understood in the Old Testament as beginning with fear of God and obedience to Him. This was lived out in a successful life of avoid trouble through practical skills and knowledge. In later history, Greek wisdom became more speculative and theoretical than these practical living skills. St. Paul reminds us today that God’s wisdom is not the wisdom of the world or that of our temporal leaders, but that God has worked a plan that could never have been predicted or anticipated on our own. The saving nature of Christ and what He has done has been revealed to us and our response to this revelation is faith, our Christian way of life. The God’s wisdom through the Cross is wiser than the wisdom of the world. Let us strive to act with His wisdom, yoking ourselves to Him and carrying the cross He has laid upon us.
