Read Galatians 6:2-10
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
This phrase speaks to the heart of Christian love and community. The law of Christ is rooted in love—love for God and love for neighbour. When we help others through their trials, we mirror Christ’s love and compassion. Carrying someone’s burdens isn’t just about offering physical assistance; it also means providing emotional, spiritual, and moral support. We enter into their struggles and share the weight they bear. In doing so, we not only help alleviate their pain but also embody the selfless love that Jesus demonstrated on the cross. This verse calls for humility and empathy, reminding us that we are all interconnected. By lifting each other up in times of need, we foster a spirit of unity and mutual care, fulfilling Christ’s command to love one another as He loves us.
Theodoret of Cyr puts it this way, “This means: ‘You have one deficiency but not another. The neighbour’s case is the opposite. He has another deficit but not the one you have. You must bear his and he yours. For thus is the law of love fulfilled.’ By the law of Christ he means love, for he himself said, “I give you a new commandment, to love one another.” (EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS 6.2.18).
By bearing each other’s burdens we are untied together in a bond of love.
