Read 2 Corinthians 11:1-6
We live in a world, brothers and sisters, where information is available to us at a rate that we’ve never experienced before. We can quickly and easily check our cellphone, or as a good friend of mind calls it, the “genie in our pocket” to give us a ready-made easy answer to many of our questions. The identity of Christ is no exception to this. Throughout the history of the Church the question Jesus asked His disciples “but who do you say that I am?” continues to resound and there are multiple, and often times conflicting responses.
This is why we need the Church whose mission it is to transmit the Truth of the identity of Christ to new generations, only handing on, unchanged, what we have received ourselves. St. Paul chastises the Corinthian Christians today in that they are too willing to be swayed to accept a different Jesus or gospel than what they originally received from him- how often can we be tempted to settle for a Jesus of our own choosing?
There are no shortages of “Jesuses” that can be brought before our eyes and at an alarming speed. These all wind up turning into simple mirrors of what it is that we would like to see or project. Only the real Jesus, crucified, died and resurrected, can lead us to salvation and glory and we can only come to know Him through trusting His Church deepen our relationship with Him.
