Proverbs 21:23 teaches, “He who keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” This wisdom underscores the importance of mindful speech in preserving one’s well-being.

The Desert Fathers, renowned for their spiritual insight, echoed this principle. Abba Or of Nitria advised, “Do not speak in your heart against your brother… but put yourself in subjection to the grace of Christ.” His counsel highlights the need for humility and restraint in our thoughts and words toward others. Abba Agathon of Scetis emphasized the perils of an uncontrolled tongue, stating, “No passion is worse than an uncontrolled tongue, because it is the mother of all the passions.” He even practiced silence by keeping a stone in his mouth for three years to master his speech.

These teachings remind us that guarding our words is vital for spiritual growth and love. By exercising control over our speech, we align ourselves with divine wisdom and foster peace within and around us.
