Read John 7:1-13
Jesus tells us that the works of the world are “evil,” and for this reason, the world hates Him. No one likes to be told that what they want to do is wrong. The prophet Isaiah once wrote: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Is. 5:20). Many people who are “of the world” are confused as to what is actually good and what is actually evil. As followers of Christ, like Jesus, we need to speak out against evil, but in doing so we risk facing the wrath of this world.
Elsewhere Jesus tells us: “In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33). Christ has conquered the evil which exists in the world. In his first epistle, St. John the Evangelist writes: “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith” (1 Jn. 5:4). Jesus has overcome the world, and through our faith in Him, we become victorious too.
