The Holy Martyr Lucillianus and those with him. Post-feast of the Ascension.
Acts 21:26-32; John 16:2-13.
Read John 16:2-13
As much as the gospels say about Jesus, they do not tell us everything. The end of the Gospel of John offers two disclaimers. First, John says: “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name” (Jn. 20:30-31), and then a little later he writes: “But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written” (Jn. 21:25). John knew his gospel account did not include “everything” that Jesus did, but his account served its purpose to testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. On top of this, Jesus told His disciples that He had many things to say to them, but they were not yet ready to hear them (Jn. 16:12). We know that Jesus did not tell His disciples “everything” but promised to send the Holy Spirit to guide them “into all the truth” (Jn. 16:13).
In a few days, we will celebrate the Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is active today in our world, in our churches, in each of our lives. He dwells within us and guides the Church. We have been gifted the Holy Spirit Who showers us with graces and gifts which we use for the glory of God and the spreading of the gospel. Although Jesus did not say “everything” to His disciples, the Holy Spirit today continues to lead us into the truth as we are prepared to receive it.
