Read Matthew 7:24-8:4
To follow Christ is not merely to hear His words but our Lord expects that we strive to live His words. At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches that the one who hears His words and acts on them “will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock” (Matt 7:24). This foundation is not just belief, but it is obedience rooted in love and humility. True discipleship involves aligning one’s whole life with the voice of Christ.
The Church Fathers stress the importance of not just hearing, but responding. St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote, “It is better to be a Christian in deed than in name. It is not the ones who merely recite the words of Christ who will be saved, but those who do what He commands.” Likewise, St. Gregory the Great reminds us, “When we listen to the words of the Gospel, we must also act, lest the punishment be greater for having known the good and not done it.” Obedience to the Word is the proof of faith.
Part of living the words of Christ is having the courage to bring the truth of His words to others. Upholding truth is not the same as passing judgment. Judgment condemns; truth sets free. We are called to speak and live the truth with love and patience, especially when the truth is uncomfortable. To stand on the rock of Christ is to not only belief in the Gospel, but the application of Jesus’ teaching with both clarity and charity; never compromising truth, but never using it as a weapon. This is the house that stands firm.
