The Transfer of the Holy Relics of the First-martyr and Archdeacon Stephen.
Dormition Fast.
Romans 13:1-10; Matthew 12:30-37.

Read Matthew 12:30-37

The life and martyrdom of St. Stephen, the Proto-martyr and Archdeacon, resound with the bold clarity of a heart united to Christ. As we commemorate the Transfer of his Holy Relics, the Church invites us to reflect not only on the deeds of his sanctified body, but on how his witness continues to “speak” even after death. Christ warns, “I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37). St. Stephen’s life offers us two examples of how words, when rooted in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, become life-giving and eternal.

First, in Acts 6, we see Stephen chosen as a deacon “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). His diaconal ministry, his service to the poor and vulnerable, proclaimed Christ’s love without words, yet he boldly preached the Gospel when the moment demanded it.

Second, during his martyrdom, Stephen’s words mirror Christ Himself: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60). These are not “careless words”, but words rooted in the one who is the source of mercy. For this reason, these words have power and extend well beyond that moment of martyrdom—they extend into eternity.

As St. Stephen’s relics were transferred and venerated, so too should his confession be transferred to us also. In a world of careless words, the Lord calls us to speak with the same truth, boldness, and mercy as St. Stephen—rooted in Christ Jesus and pointing to eternity.
