Abstention from meat and foods that contain meat.

Read Mark 12:1-12

The idea of hardness of heart comes to mind when thinking about the response of the chief priests and elders to whom this parable is addressed. When we realize that these elders understood that Jesus was speaking of them, it is rather tragic that they continued to follow through with their intention to have Jesus killed. However, is it not often the case that when a decision to carry out a certain action has been decided upon that it is very difficult to abandon that course of action? The main factors that contribute to remaining obstinate and closed off to the reception of divine truth are pride, anger, bitterness and unforgiveness. To combat these sinful tendencies we need to cultivate a desire for repentance. Through prayer and reflecting upon scripture we begin to open up our hearts to be more receptive to the voice of God. Let us also remember the great compassion that God has for sinners and try to imitate Him in our dealings with those who offend us.
