Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
One of the titles of Jesus is that of light. The Lord proclaims today that he is, “the light of the world…” First and foremost this is a proclamation of divinity: “God is light and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5). Jesus is claiming that the uncreated light of the glory of God is not just in Him, but is Him. That same Glory that Moses encountered is now present in human form—the transfiguration (Matt 17:1) is a showing forth of what is present behind the flesh.
It is interesting that physicists who study the cosmos have noticed that the one constant in the created order is light. Mass, time, space all act differently depending on the point of reference that exists around it. While light acts the same no matter what. It is a constant. It is an essential ingredient not only for humanity and the creatures that exist on this earth but for the entire cosmos. Light and life go hand in hand. That’s why Jesus also proclaims that he is the “resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). This is how essential Jesus is to each human being. Without Jesus we stumble in the darkness, we have no stability, no rhythm to life, no meaning, no health, and no life. We cannot survive if the sun were to disappear, and even more so without Jesus, we cannot live. This is the treasure of the light of Christ and how precious our relationship with Jesus is.
