Patience is a virtue with which we all struggle. In a society of instant gratification, we project our desire for an instantaneous resolution into every aspect of our lives, especially prayer.
A few weeks ago, we read from the Book of Genesis and heard God’s promise to Abraham that he would be the father of many nations and his descendants would be more numerous than the stars of the sky. This covenant with Abraham was not one of instant fulfilment but would take time to come to fruition. It is in today’s reading from the Book of Exodus that we see the fruit of God’s covenant with Abraham. The faithful Israelites are more numerous than their Egyptian oppressors. God’s promise is being fulfilled.
Our God is one who keeps His promises and fulfils His covenant with His faithful. As we enter in Great and Holy Week, may we never doubt God’s faithfulness to us, His people. May we have the patience we need to see His covenant come to fulfilment.
