Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

How can Jesus tell us on one hand to ‘fear him, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell’ and then on the other, ‘fear not’.  Jesus is telling us that we aught to have a healthy fear and avoid unhealthy fear. A healthy proper fear directed toward God is one of awe, reverence, submission and deep respect. A fear of violating and breaking the precious gift of a relationship with Him. This can even apply to married couples who have a deep love for one another. They fear the loss of the gift of their relationship, so they treat each other with respect and proper dignity. Taking care not to damage or break their relationship.

An unhealthy fear is one based on terror. Yes, God has the power of life, death and judgment, so we are reminded that God is profoundly greater than we can imagine. We are held by Him and not God by us—in other words, you cannot put God in a box. Yet, this eternal God is personal and takes an interest in the minute details of your life. God is faithful, predictable, trustworthy and he cares for us like no one else: “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” This is why Jesus reminds us to fear not, for we are loved and cared for.
