Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
It is very interesting that only on the fourth day the sun and moon are created. Prior to this day it was God’s divine light sustaining all of creation. Now the Lord imprints some of these qualities onto the sun: light, heat and great power. No wonder that pagan religions have mistaken the sun for its Creator. Christian theologians understanding that it’s only a creature have nonetheless contemplated the sun as an image of the Trinity. The sun may be taken to mean the Father, while the light that shines forth from the sun exemplifies the Son and the heat represents the Holy Spirit. This example was provided by St. Herman, the Patriarch of Constantinople, in the 8th century.
May the Son of righteousness who is eternally begotten from the one God and Father shine upon us this Lenten season and may we feel, and be empowered, by the warmth of God’s love with the gift and presence of the Holy Spirit.
