Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.
What kind of person would go out of their way to hide their penitential lifestyle? It would be a joyful person, also a positive, confident person, who does not need a pat on the back every time they do something good. It is a person that does not need recognition.
Jesus is giving us a practical lesson on how to exercise humility. How can we exercise humility? By going out of our way to avoid recognition. Someone may say: “That’s almost impossible.” Lent is coming up. This is the time to try the impossible.
