I remember a priest beginning his homily on Thomas Sunday once with the words “Doubt is not a sin.” He went on to explain that all of us doubt at times, but it is not a state in which we should remain. Our Christian faith is dynamic, not static.

If we are stuck at a stage of doubt there are several things we need to do, because we cannot remain there. Firstly, we must ask ourselves whether we truly desire to know God as He is and how He makes Himself present in our lives. If we say yes, reaffirming our baptism, then we must reach out to Him in prayer daily. We must also reach out to those around us, who are strong in faith and discuss with them the questions we have. There is no shame in asking questions or saying that we struggle with faith. Just look at the apostles, especially Thomas, Peter, James, and John, who were constantly trying to figure out “Just who are you, Lord?” Finally, in our daily prayer, we must ask God for greater faith, hope, and love. We must ask Him for greater faith because our faith is weak. We must ask Him for greater hope because so often we fail to trust in Him. And we must ask for greater love because we love imperfectly. Believe me, He will give you these things and you will be changed.
