Bread is a staple food in many cultures throughout the world. There are baguettes, tortillas, injera, Portuguese rolls, matzah, and many other delicious forms and varieties of bread. When the Israelites journeyed in the desert to the Promised Land, God provided them with manna, also called “bread from heaven,” to sustain them in the wilderness. As we Christians journey to the Father’s Kingdom, God provides us with the flesh of His Son, the Bread of Life, to nourish us on our spiritual journey to everlasting life. As we pray in the Our Father, we ask that God give us our “daily bread.” We not only ask for physical sustenance but also spiritual sustenance. As He provided bread for the Israelites, He also provides a new Bread for us. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness with hunger, Jesus answered him: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” (Mt. 4:4). As important as physical nourishment is, we know spiritual nourishment is even more important. In His goodness and generosity, God provides us with both.
