Read Luke 4:22-30

Disappointment often leads to condemnation. In this account the Jewish community of Nazareth, the town in which Jesus grew up, becomes quite upset with this “son” of a carpenter. Jesus tells them that in the days of Elijah and Elisha that is was a Gentile woman and a Gentile man that were spared and not the Jews. The Jews that Jesus was speaking too believed that they were the chosen people of God and that God would protect their race over the Gentiles. This obviously creates a large degree of animosity towards Jesus in that they wanted to throw Him off a cliff. The message that they heard did not agree with their vision of God. They wanted to hear how they had been faithful to God and how God would vindicate them for the offences committed against them by the Romans, a Gentile peoples. Instead they are told that the Gentiles will come to believe and worship the true God of Israel. Is it not often the case that when we are told information that doesn’t agree with our view of what is right and what is wrong that we too become spiteful towards such messages. May we ask the Lord for the grace to reexamine our own understanding of things before condemning others to a fate that goes contrary to the will of God.
