Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
What’s the difference between a “day off” and the Sabbath?
By the time of the writing of St. Luke’s gospel, the truth that the Sabbath was made to be a day of rest and also delight was one which had been lost through a greater and greater focus on ritual practice. However, something similar can happen in our own day with our focus on the “work week.” We are busy (in many cases needlessly so) and therefore require appropriate rest, but rest and restoration go hand-in-hand only under Christ, who is “the Lord of the Sabbath.”
I encourage you not to see Sunday as a “day off” from your work week, but instead as a true sabbath: a privileged time of resting at the feet of Christ and choosing to be engaged in restorative activities as opposed to mindless entertainment. This choice is even more important during our increased screen dependence for work and social encounters!
