Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

Too often, the work of the Church, which is to make disciples of all nations, is seen as the exclusive responsibility of the clergy, namely priests and bishops. Now, the clergy are certainly called to a specific and important vocation, set apart for a greater dedication to the work of Church. However, this does not imply that the clergy alone bear responsibility for the work of the Church or that there cannot exist cohesive work with between clergy and laity.

As an apostle, St. Paul was set apart for this work by Jesus Christ himself. But as we see in today’s epistle reading, he did not and could not accomplish the apostolic work alone. He had numerous co-workers in the various churches to whom he ministered and wrote letters. He sent some of his close collaborators, like Epaphroditus mentioned in today’s reading, when he was unable to personally go and work with the local church for the building up of God’s Kingdom here on earth.

Whether we are a priest, monk, nun, or member of the laity, we all have a place and role within the Church and we all contribute to the work of the Church in the world. Through prayer and discernment, may we all find the place in the Church where the Lord is calling us and may we answer His call.
