Peter’s confession that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God is on full display here. Jesus’ response suggests that this revelation cannot come from flesh and blood, not from earthly seduction or ways of thinking, but from above. Human reason can get us far. Through reasoning, we can deduce that there is a God. But reason cannot deduce or produce, Jesus Christ. This is the work of revelation. The revelation of who Christ is gives us new data to work with. This does not mean that faith I. Christ is opposed to reason. It just means that the fact of who Christ is needs to be dealt with reasonably. New facts require new feelings. With Christ the messiah in the midst of our lives, we need to use our reason to construct our lives around it.
The church is built on this unfaltering foundation of who Christ is. It provides the avenue to live our lives and use every piece of our humanity—reason included—as an instrument to understand and know the living God, revealed to us by our Father in heaven in the flesh and blood of Jesus.
