Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
Whenever we read any of the accounts in the Gospel of people rejecting Jesus, our hearts should mourn the circumstance and the people involved. The Son of God in his infinite love for humanity has become incarnate to save humanity from sin, death, and the devil. We can also add that Jesus saves us from a meaningless existence. He came with great power, healing the sick and the possessed. He gives us true freedom from the bondage of our existential enemies and gives us an opportunity, through him, to become children of God. Who would not want to foster a close relationship with Jesus? Yet, there are those who are threatened by Jesus and wish to cast him out. In our country, this contingent is growing at an accelerated rate and we are trying to throw away our Christian history, and Christianity in general, off the cliff.
The Good News is that, even though Christ respects our freedom—just as he respected the freedom of the people of his own city to reject him—he will not be cast off the cliff. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. All of human history comes from him (Gen 1) and culminates in him (Rev 22). There is no way to throw him off the cliff. We are either with him or against him. We either gather with him or scatter. (Matthew 12:30). In other words, by attempting to throw Jesus off the cliff we ourselves are jumping to our own demise.
