One of the most treasured discoveries of the ancient world was the tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh. Kings spent fortunes constructing chambers they believed no thief could enter and no enemy could violate. Yet nearly every tomb was eventually opened. If the Pharaohs could see this today they would reckon their plans a complete failure. Human security, no matter how magnificent, proved temporary.
St. Paul points us toward a treasure no power on earth can plunder.
Today’s reading reminds us o the far greater promise that God can weave every event, be it suffering, betrayal, illness, failure, into the tapestry of our salvation for those who love Him. The Cross itself is the supreme example. What appeared to be history’s greatest defeat became history’s greatest victory. If God could transform Calvary into Pascha morning, He can also transform the failures we reluctantly carry.
One spiritual writer remarked, “How can you despair when even your worst mistakes are being hijacked by God and weaponized for your own salvation?” It is a startling way to express a profound biblical truth. God never wills evil, but He is so infinitely wise and powerful that, once we repent and surrender to Him, even our failures become raw material for His mercy. The devil intends our sins to end in despair; God intends our repentance to end in sanctity.
Imagine an old master weaver working on the underside of a tapestry. From below, all we see are tangled knots, loose threads, and confusing colors. It appears chaotic. But when the tapestry is turned over, every thread has found its proper place in a magnificent design. Our lives are usually lived from underneath. God alone sees the finished side.
So stop judging God’s faithfulness by today’s circumstances. Judge today’s circumstances by God’s unchanging faithfulness. The final word is the invincible love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
